Chicago Lighthouse Seniors Program — Empowering Senior Citizens
The Chicago Lighthouse is a social service organization that serves special groups such as the blind, physically challenged, visually impaired, and veteran communities. Since its inception, Chicago Lighthouse has launched and managed a number of programs, including the Seniors Program. The Seniors Program targets adults over 55 who are facing vision loss. The program develops relevant initiatives to help boost independence, nurture critical skills, and develop a sense of community for seniors who are blind or visually impaired. Some of the regular initiatives under the Seniors Program include wellness, exercise, technology training, and brain games, among others. In addition, Chicago Lighthouse offers topic-driven sessions to address various issues that impact the Lighthouse community.
Chicago Lighthouse collaborates with local partner organizations to obtain expert facilitation and assistance for various initiatives. Classes and events are planned monthly and often vary from one month to another. Participants have the freedom to design their own schedules based on their interests and availability. One of the initiatives under the Seniors Program is the Seniors Support Group, which welcomes participants 55 and older for an interactive session to share information and acquire knowledge on how to retain independence while obtaining the necessary support. Seniors Program initiatives are facilitated via telephone programming and occasional in-person programming.
